Learning Cued Speech

Workshops are offered upon request at Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School in Wheeling, IL. The registration fee for each workshop is $75 per person. Workshops are best taken in a full day format, but alternate arrangements are available.  Offsite workshops are offered by special arrangement.

Workshop Levels

Introduction to Cued Speech

Participants will learn the Cued Speech system of 8 handshapes and 4 vowel placements and how to combine the handshapes with the placements to convey all of the sounds of spoken language, syllable by syllable. They will learn the basic rules of Cued Speech and should be able to Cue words and simple sentences by the end of the day. They will learn effective practice techniques and will be given practice materials to take home.
Cued Speech Part 2: What now?

Review of Introduction to Cued Speech Part 1 Workshop. The focus will be on developing the participants’ cueing fluency and accuracy so they begin to develop confidence and automaticity in their cueing skills. We will work on liaisons, multi-syllabic words and simple conversational skills.  Specific areas of need of individual participants will also be addressed.  Attending both an Introduction to Cued Speech Parts 1 and Part 2 Workshops is highly recommended. Mastery of the Cued Speech system and development of basic fluency requires 10-20 hours of instruction with additional practice hours.
Cued Speech Enhancements

Continued practice on fluency and accuracy.  Specific feedback will be given to increase and strengthen comfort levels in using Cued Speech.

Online Cued Speech Learning

Picture
As an outreach program of Alternatives in Education for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals (AEHI), Cue College will offer an array of courses, products, services, and resources for teaching Cued Speech and best practices in the use of Cued Speech to families and professionals.  Cue College was developed to be a collaborative platform from which our colleagues in the national and international Cued Speech community could share, via the internet, expertise and resources they have developed over the years — so that all who could benefit from Cued Speech would finally have access.

Cue College’s first online course provides an overview of the Cued Speech system and includes all the hand shapes and hand placements associated with each phoneme, or speech sound, of spoken English.
CS100 takes you through the foundations and mechanics of Cued Speech, with examples of different words cued at each hand placement with each hand shape. Along with an introduction lesson, there are fourteen lessons that cover the phonemes corresponding with each hand shape and hand placement. Each of those lessons include videos that you can watch while practicing your cueing.  You will be able to save your progress and return at another time to complete the course.
