Our Staff

When it comes to instruction, you won’t find any higher quality than at AGBMS. Our school serves as an official practicum and observation site for National Louis University, Illinois State University, and Northern Illinois University. It also has been designated as a model program by the American Montessori Society.

All of our teachers are certified by the American Montessori Society and most are also certified by the Illinois State Board of Education. Following is a list of our educational staff.

 

Debbie Blackburn – Founder, Business Director, Reading Program Director, Special Education Director

  • 27 years experience teaching in Montessori schools at the elementary level
  • Recipient of Kohl International Teaching Award
  • Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Special Education, Western Illinois University
  • Master of Art in Library Science, Northern Illinois University
  • Three different teaching certificates from the State of Illinois
  • American Montessori Society Certification
  • Guest Speaker at American Montessori Society (AMS) National Convention in Chicago
  • Guest speaker at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Carol Martorano – Educational Director

  • Recipient of the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers Award for 2004 and 2005
  • 13 years experience teaching in Montessori schools at the elementary level. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Montessori Education (ages 6-9), Xavier University
  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Northeastern Illinois University
  • American Montessori Society Certification (ages 6-12)
  • Elementary II (Ages 9-12) Certification from the Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center

Agnes Guerra – Children’s House (ages 3-6)

  • 12 years experience in Montessori schools, 8 as a certified directress

Kristin Ivelic – Children’s House (ages 3-6)

 Jamie Archer - Children's House (ages 3-6)

  • Nine years experience in Montessori schools, Eight as a certified Directress

  • Illinois State Teaching Certificate with Middle School and Speech Endorsements

Jessica Maag – 0-3 Program Co-ordinator

  • 8 years experience working in Montessori classrooms, including directing a two-year-old class,  parent-child class and a 9-12 class, and assisting in a 3-6 classroom and an elementary summer program.

 Katie Lesh - Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, specializing in Deaf or Hard of Hearing Education with a minor in Communication Disorders - Illinois State University
  • Illinois Teachers of Hard of Hearing/Deaf Individuals (ITHI) member
  • Illinois State Certification for children ages 3-21
  • Taking classes in auditory verbal therapy at Children's Memorial Hospital Symposium
  • Working toward Early Intervention Certification - Illinois State University

 

Lori Scott – Our Nest Directress (age 2)

  • 7 years experience at AGBMS directing both before and after school care, as well as an assistant in both Elementary and Children’s House
  • Bachelors Degree in English Literature and Education – Northeastern Illinois University
  • Working toward American Montessori Society Certification - birth through age three - Meca Seton

 

Bhavini Shah - Extended Day Assistant and Our Nest After School Directress

  • 6 years experience working in Montessori schools
  • Diploma in preschool education for early childhood care
  • Association Montessori Internationale certification (Ages 3-6)
  • Masters Degree in English Literature
  • Fluent in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi

 

Vicki Meyer – Elementary Assistant and Art Teacher

  • 19 years experience in the Montessori Elementary classroom
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in fine arts – Northeastern Illinois University
  • Paraprofessional certification from the Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center
  • Background in music, home economics and child development from North Dakota State University

 

Liz Hupp – Children’s House Assistant

  • 25 years experience working in classrooms as a teacher, assistant, and volunteer

Kim Haller – Children’s House Assistant

  • 6 years experience working at Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School as an After-school care teacher and Children’s House Assistant
