Children’s House

Children’s House (ages 3-6)

Children love the manipulative materials and explore many varied activities. These range from practical life and social-emotional skills to phonetic spelling and learning the decimal system. Full day and half-day programs are available.

Children’s House offers program options for children ages 3-6 (preschool through kindergarten):

  • Morning (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) – 5 days per week
  • Full Day (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) – 3 or 5 days per week
  • Introductory program – 3 half days the first semester, 5 half days the second semester.
  • Afternoon Program (12:00 – 3:00 p.m.) – 5 days per week – this program is designed as an enrichment program for five-year-olds participating elsewhere in a morning kindergarten program.

Before- and after-school care is available to all enrolled participants.

Morning Program (5 days)

Our morning program gives children the foundation for a life of creative learning, while giving them “afternoons off.” Children develop and refine a sense of order by engaging in activities ranging from sorting, to phonetic spelling to simple mathematical operations.

The morning program meets five days per week. Children who are not ready to be away from home every day can enroll in our Introductory Program, which meets 3 days per week for the first semester, moving to 5 days per week the second semester.

The day begins with line time, an opportunity for children to sing together or do large muscle movement exercises. This also is a time for sharing news or watching presentations of new materials.  After line time, children have “work time,” engaging in activities on their own or in small groups. A high-protein, low-sugar snack is available for all the children at this time.

After work time, the children have playtime outside – in all kinds of weather. We believe the fresh air and sunshine is vital; they just need to be dressed for it! After play time, the children come back to line to end their morning as a large group.

Full Day Program (3 or 5 days per week)

Our full-day program provides your child with the foundation for a life of creative learning. Children develop and refine a sense of order by engaging in activities ranging from sorting to phonetic spelling to simple mathematical operations.

Parents can enroll their children in the 5-day program (Monday-Friday) or the 3-day program, choosing whichever days work best for them. Children who begin in the 3-day program can move to the 5-day program at any time if space is available.

After work time, the children have play time outside – in all kinds of weather. We believe the fresh air and sunshine is vital; they just need to be dressed for it! They then come in for lunch as a group – an activity which includes clean-up done by the children themselves as part of their “practical living” education.

After lunch, it’s time for a story and a nap for children ages 3-4. Children who no longer nap enjoy the story and 15-20 minutes of “quiet time,” before joining the older children and continue their work from the morning. Naptime ends at 2:45, when children get ready to go home at 3:00.

Children ages 5-6 do not nap. They stay with the group for story time, followed by a 15-20 minute “quiet time.” They then begin their “extended day,” which allows for increased breadth and depth in the children’s exploration of the curriculum. This is the time of day reserved for advanced math, reading, geography, natural science and special projects, and introduces the use of more advanced materials as the year continues. Emphasis is also placed on the recording of learned information, so children spend lots of time writing and drawing. Children continue these works for the afternoon, stopping at 2:45 to get ready to go home.

We believe that full-day Montessori education at the kindergarten level (age 5-6) is an important culmination of the mental and intellectual tasks the child has begun in Children’s House.  In this final year of Children’s House, the Extended Day program provides an opportunity to solidify your child’s experiences, and lays the groundwork for what is yet to come in Montessori elementary.

Afternoon Program (5 days per week)

This is an enrichment program for five and six-year-olds participating elsewhere in a morning kindergarten program. This program allows for increased breadth and depth in the children’s exploration of the curriculum. This time is spent on advanced math, reading, geography, natural science and special projects. Emphasis is also placed on the recording of learned information, so children spend lots of time writing and drawing.

Introductory Program (3 half days 1st semester, 5 half days 2nd semester)

This program is designed to help children who have never been away from home adjust to a school schedule, allowing them to attend for 3 half days the first semester, and 5 half days the second semester.
