Alternatives in Education for the Hearing Impaired (AEHI) fosters
literacy and empowers people with
hearing loss
to achieve their full
potential through unique
educational options. AEHI’s mission is
to
provide full
educational opportunity and age-appropriate literacy
skills for deaf and hard-of-hearing
children by:
…ensuring that parents of children who are deaf or hard of
hearing are aware of all of their options for
educating and
communicating with their
children;
…providing training in Cued Speech – a tool that makes spoken
language 100% accessible to the deaf – to
parents, teachers and
other professionals who
serve deaf children;
…providing a visual/oral Cued Speech program for educating
deaf children alongside their hearing peers
and supporting parents’
rights to choose this
program for their children; and
…educating the educators and other professionals throughout
the Midwest in the use of successful
approaches and techniques
for improving
literacy
rates and speech and listening skills for
children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
