What is Montessori?
Maria Montessori was the first woman doctor in Italy in the late 1800’s. Her studies brought her to work with young children with developmental delays. During this time, she created a model of education that aided children in their development of intelligence and independence. This method won her international fame.
Today, there are thousands of Montessori schools world-wide. These schools continue to meet the needs of the child in distinct classroom settings: 3-6 year olds, 6-9 year olds, 9-12 year olds and erdkinder. The erdkinder is the adolescent stage of development where the children do “real” work of an adult. Many schools set up farms where the children care for the animals, sell the produce of the farm, and take care of all business dealings.
